American Expats Experience German Karneval

American Expats Experience German Karneval

Well folks, this weekend was definitely one for the record books.  Friday after work, we boarded a train and headed north to Südlohn, a small town almost in the Netherlands, to participate in a weekend of Karneval festivities with some new German friends. The first parade was on Saturday and they continued through Monday.  One of Aaron's coworkers and his friends built probably the most elaborate floats I've ever seen.

Fastnacht

Whatever you want to call it, they all mean the same thing, well almost the same thing - party time in Germany!  As if the Germans required yet another excuse to party and drink beer, the beginning of the year is known as Karneval season.

Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial

Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial

ust outside of Luxembourg city is the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial.  Aaron and I made sure to stop here on our way home.  It was established on December 29, 1944 by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the US Army when American troops began burying those lost in battle. Today, over 5,000 service men and women have the cemetery as their final resting place.  In 1951, the land on which the cemetery rest was signed over to the US for their use in perpetuity.

Underwater Cities

Underwater Cities

On Sunday, we checked off another item on our Bucket List - diving in Sundhäuser See.  I can't remember exactly how I found  out about this lake, although I think it was this PADI article I read about a year ago.  What caught my eye was the underwater city part.  And the fact that it was one of the closer ones to us that was listed.  We weren't going to be far from the lake so it naturally made sense to pay it a visit.

Mine Tours and Snow

Mine Tours and Snow

We found snow!  This weekend, we headed north, instead of south, to the town of Goslar.  We left after work on Friday and headed out.  On our way, we stopped and stayed in a small hotel in a small outdoor recreation area next to a river.  Conveniently, this was their first snowfall of the year, meaning the snow was still clean, and it coated everything.  It was absolutely beautiful! Inconveniently, the Germans apparently didn't know how to drive in the snow.  About 30 km away from our final destination, traffic

New Look, Same Stuff

New Look, Same Stuff

Well hello and Happy Friday!  If you're reading this in a browser, you may have noticed something different.  Submerged Oaks has gotten a little bit of a make-over!  Aaron and I both felt that the old design was ok, but we thought we could do better.  It started with a change in color pallet and snowballed from there.  There were a lot of changes behind the scene that we had to figure out, but we like the new look and layout much better.
